A 2½-Mile Walk Toward Opportunity

Jun 17, 2026 | Adult Education, Beverly Bootstraps

Step by step, subject by subject, their work together has grown into more than tutoring. It is a partnership grounded in trust, consistency, and mutual dedication.

Sawyer, a High School Equivalency student, and Lizzie, his tutor, have built a strong and inspiring partnership.

On cold mornings and rainy days, Sawyer makes the same journey—walking over 2½ miles from Salem, across the bridge, to attend tutoring. Whether his session begins at 9:30 AM or earlier, he consistently arrives early and is ready to learn, regardless of the weather.

During the winter months, he carries hand warmers to make the walk more manageable. When others recognize his dedication, Sawyer humbly responds, simply saying, “It’s good exercise.”

Lizzie demonstrates that same level of commitment. She adjusts her schedule as needed to ensure they can meet and she brings a thoughtful, encouraging approach to each session.

While focusing on writing, Lizzie identified that Sawyer could benefit from additional support in math. She collaborated with staff to coordinate those resources. With that support, he also passed his math test and, in five short months, completed the requirements to earn his High School Equivalency Diploma on June 25.

Stories like Sawyer and Lizzie’s reflect the meaningful connections formed through our Adult Education program—and we are grateful to witness them every day.
