Jim*, an elderly veteran, recently came to Beverly Bootstraps with tears in his eyes. Holding a letter from the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) that helps low-income individuals meet their basic needs, he expressed his fears of losing his home. Jim explained that his SNAP benefit and cash assistance had been dramatically reduced. Now, through no fault of his own, Jim faces real fears. Without much of the financial assistance he had come to rely on, he can’t afford his medications and soon won’t be able to pay his rent. “I am too old to sleep on the street,” he said quietly.
Jim, who is already utilizing our Food Pantry, has been connected to our Case Management team to discuss rental assistance and other ways we can help. Jim’s story is like so many others that we hear more often. Our neighbors are facing sudden and, at times, dramatic changes to the support they rely on. In the past 12 months alone, Beverly Bootstraps served 6,876 individuals — a 11% increase over just two years. Among them, 912 are seniors, representing a 28% rise in our senior neighbors seeking help.
With the generous support of our donors, we answer this call for help. In the past year, we distributed over 1 million pounds of food and served over 3,000 households to ensure no one went hungry. This is possible because of you.
At Beverly Bootstraps, we believe no one in our community should face these tough transitions alone. Your generosity continues to provide critical resources to people of all ages and backgrounds, so they can get through difficult times and work toward stability.
As more people come through our doors, we’re reaching out for your help to ensure that our seniors like Jim have the resources they need to survive and thrive.
